The specimens from Ostrówka and Kowala may represent the first stage in development of an additional process characterizing species of Antognathus (see Sandberg and Dreesen 1984). Taking the P1 element alone, it seems likely that the process developed de novo and is not homologous with the differently oriented process in Latericriodus sp. However, the association of a surprisingly primitive, denticulated P2 element of seemingly Early Devonian morphology suggests that this is rather a kind of late Devonian ‘living fossil’.
