Protognathodus kockeli

Sugerowana cytacja: Dzik, J. 2015. Protognathodus kockeli (Bischoff, 1957) . Ikonoteka (http://ikonoteka.paleo.pan.pl/xwiki/bin/viewrev/Species/Protognathodus+kockeli+)

Diagnoza

Mature platform elements covered with irregularly distributed tubercles; only a few of tchem occur in juveniles.
The apparatus is of a rather generalised polygnathid morphology. Only the relatively loosely distributed denticles and elongated processes of the oz element may allow its discrimination from similar apparatuses.

Porównanie

The S elements of Protognathodus kockeli resemble those of the earliest member of Gnathodus, G. punctatus (Cooper, 1939) in that it does not show the strong external curvature of the ventral proces, which is the characteristic feature for all the other idiognathodontids. G. delicatus Branson & Mehl, 1938, which in North America occurs in the upper portion of the range of Siphonodella, being thus coeval with latest Protognathodus populations in Europe, differs from
P. kockeli in a more asymmetric distribution of tubercles on the conical part (cup) of the P1 elements.
