Diagnoza Medium sized shearwater (length 30–40 cm; wingspan 76–93 cm; body mass 472–565 g); slightly larger than the Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus and the Yelkouan shearwater Puffinus yelkouan, appearing massive with a gray-brown upperside and a brownish-white underside of the body with no contrast on the sides of the head and breast; underwing coverts with a darker drawing; short tail with legs sticking out beyond its end. Porównanie Similar to Yelkouan shearwater P. yelkouan, but with undertail coverts, feathers of the crissum, flanks, and axillaries entirely and uniformly smoky brown; in the cervical region the smoky greyish-brown coloration extends well forward from the sides towards the mid-line in front, and also from the flanks across the lower abdomen. Autekologia Mainly inshore waters; breeds in caves on coastal islands, sometimes nests on cliffs and in some distance inland; feeds by surface-seizing and by underwater pursuit of prey; very little information about diet of this species; probably eat mostly fish. Występowanie geograficzne Breeding only on the Balearic Islands; after breeding on West and central Mediterranean and east Atlantic; very rare on Baltic Sea; in Poland only 1 records in Rewa (20.08.1993) during storm Zasięg czasowy probably latest Pliocene – Recent; no fossil records but molecular differences and the Ibizan fossil of Puffinus nestori (Late Pliocene or Early Pleistocene), which may have been the direct ancestor of the present species suggest that two recent Mediterranean lineages of Shearwaters probably separated before the end of the Pliocene (ca. 2 Ma).
